I'm thinkin' you should use the actionwood as a lam as it will save you cash that way.  Two Tracks can sell you some. Kenny M sells it too.

I was thinking about a flat grain veneer.
I'm not sure if actionwood is a good lam when oriented that way.

What do you all think?

Yea, I'd use straight cut for the cores and flat grain as a veneer. The flat grain stuff looks great as a veneer. KennyM is a great source!
