What type of stitching material is most often found on longbow grips and where can it be found?

Scott Feltch

I'd like to know what people are using also. Anyone?

Artificial sinew or commercial waxed nylon or linen thread for leatherwork.

Look at Tandy leather, they usually have scraps really cheap.

go to your local upholstry shop. i assure you they have leftover distressed upholstry leather. its just the right thickness for handle wraps. this is one i did using the distressed leather. i have some that is a burgundy color. if you would like a peice shoot me a pm  with your adress and i will send you a peice with some waxed nylon thread to try. ruddy

If you have a farm supply/feed store they should have some leather.  Atwood's carries a $5 package of leather scraps that may have some decent pieces and maybe lacings.

I got a bunch of 12X12" samples from a local leather furnitire sales store. They usually have swatch packs of the different colors they sell. Once the discontinue an item, the swatches aren't of any use. I just asked the sales guy if they had any of their old swatch "books" they were going to dispose of. He went to the back and brought out a whole bunch!

I'll use art sinew, dacron (hey, it's useful for something  ;) ) waxed lined, heavy outdoor thread, saddle thread... pretty much anything to stitch a grip.  Can get some of it at pretty much any craft store.

I buy a lot of leather and have a bunch of offcuts that are perfect for grips.  I'd advise against buying leather from moscow hide and fur.  I use them when I'm in a pinch, but have yet to be satisfied with anything other than fur from them.

The swatch books from furniture stores is a great tip to get small pieces of the thin leather that's perfect for grips!

Every time I go by Goodwill I stop and usually pick some nice leather skits, vest, or pants.  Even got a real nice mini skirt one time.  Very good leather, and can't beat the price.  And I use 70# artificial sinew to stitch with.

Last grip I did, I used B50 - twised three strands of the string together.   Worked well for me.

I use some sort of thin black twine material that I got at a craft store.  It says its made from leather, but doesn't look like it.  The last couple of grips were made from my wifes old leather coat.
