mcfly silencers

just wondered if anyone has tried using the "mcfly" yarn/egg foam for fly tying , as a silencer. was going to pick some up before the hunt this weekend , just not sure if it even holds up. if not ill go with wool yarn , but the fly yarn is something i normally have on hand , and i need more for flies anyways...so....

I've used rabbit zonkers for tracers on arrows but not tried it or fly yarn for silencers. Is it thick enough.

Mcfly foam stretches over time. I think it actualy just looses the kink and gets longer. It should hold up but your puff will get larger and looser. Might just trim after a while. I have used the yarn alot but not for silencers, I have thought about it but I use rubber legs and they work great on my bow. I would not use the other egg yarns as they will shred and fall apart if to long. Mcfly comes in olive, brown, tan, black... you might have to order those colors. Give it a try and let us know how it works.

i must have had the other stuff , cause it was more like a loose yarn than actual long filaments. it was blaze orange , thats why i thought it might make a nice puff. i was thinking about that today , and im just going to pickup some wool yarn until i get some game. then ill either have tree rat silencer or rabbits...

i was thinking the other day , pat , about hair-on rawhide. read something about making a rawhide string , and that some native americans left the hair on. it was speculated that they did this for strength and kind of sheathed the hair inside the string , i think they were just using hair on , twisted rawhide , and the whole string was silenced.

id imagine they plucked the hair out about the middle 1/3 since its moving anywhere up to 20" or so....

but yeah , im just gonna get some wool yarn...

If you can find raw wool yarn with lonolin still in it it will be very water repellent.

im going to pick some up tomorrow. i got some wool yarn today in blaze orange , and i dont know if i like it yet. i need some zonkers for spring steelies though ...

hopefully sunday ill be able to make up my own rabbit strips!

im looking forward to it. jamesv sent me a bow , but i dont think ill have it finished by then...i want to do him proud on it , so i dont really want to just slap on some finish just cause it is a sweet shooting bow...

it shoots directly where i look though , and i hear thats a good feature in a bow...

i am pretty much all done with mine. i went with nutters. i was looking last night though , at POC shafts , and i just dont know if i can bring myself to pay that much for shafts...

after i did shafts , fletching , and field tips for 12 arrows , i was up to almost 50$... i know i was looking at 49.99 for a dozen arrows for my wheelie bow , but i think im going to buy 100 hardwood dowels online for 39.99 , and just wait for fletching to come on its own.

now i gotta get into napping points as well , those broadheads were like 6$ a piece....
