What is the best background color to glue cottonmouth skins over? I know copperheads need a light background to "pop", just wondering if cottonmouths are the same.

Cottonmouths come in all colors. I have seen them solid almost black to vivid designs to a black head fading to bright yellow tail.
I never color any bow wood before adding skins. I like the looks of the natural wood color under the skin.

Heck if you have enough cut off a small peice and test it out on differnt woods and see.

i wouldn't paint your glass. they should look great over black glass. i know what you mean about choosing which color back ground to use with certain skins. all things being equal though. black is probably the best all around background color for skins. imo.

These were done over black glass with Bamboo limbs.

Since the predominate color of the water moccasin skins are black you really don't want to put them over black glass. A cream white background will make them look natural. If you want to get some color put them over yellow or orange, maybe even red.
