I recieved an Osage slat today in the mail as part of a trade. It is 1 3/4" wide, 67" long and 5/8" thick. It is quarter sawn and has a few small knots in it and has a little natural deflex. What would you guys do with it. I don't have bamboo or hickory to back it with but could aways get some. Any design ideas will be appreciated.

I would buy a good piece of Boo and deflex/reflex it.

Always strive to do the right thing. Don't beat yourself down when you mess up. Ask for forgivness and keep on keeping on.

I have a piece of bamboo, do you have anything to swap?

Hickory is another option as a backing for osage slats. I have made quite a few hickory backed hunting weight osage bows, all with good results. I find hickory backing less work and less prone to problems than boo backing. Others will disagree, I'm sure.   A simple rawhide backing would work fine also but with no added performance.

Pat, is 5/8" enough wood to work on its own without any backing. I have a second piece to use as a handle.

You could do a bendy handle bow, Cherokee style, without a backing if the grain is appropriate or add a rawhide backing for protection.
