What is the best type of wood to use for a 68" recurve?  I'm going to start building one and want to use something real nice.  Any thoughts?

Selfbow or lam bow?  68" is a bit long to get the full benefit from recurves.

Diamondwood for a riser, it will help you see the uniformity of your sanding and cuts better than solid hardwoods, for a first time builder this will help you get everything nice and symetric.  See KennyM for you lams, you'd be hard pressed to find faster shipping, and a better product.  I order my glass, lams, wedge material, and riser material for my bows.  He also sells glues and other building supplies.

If you have to tools to process you own lams (band saw, joiner or planer), you can buy maple at Home Depot for cheap.I have also used poplar from Home Depot with good results in lighter bows.  Here is also a good guide for getting the correct thickness of your lams for the weight you want.    http://www.binghamprojects.com/Page%2019.pdf

I'm pretty excited about building my first bow.  But I'm torn between a bow I saw at Walmart tonight.  The girl said they shoot better than any hand made bow.  I think I might go back to Walmart to see her.  Thanks for the suggestions on the wood.

was she cute? it was the bow holding her smock on wasn't it?

poor taste...?

anyway, i doubt wallyworld carries a bow to match one you carefully made to your own style and needs.

I didn't know Walmart carried Traditional bows anymore, nor did I know that they now have an archery pro staff.  Careful, she might try to sell you a xbow.
