Accurate Bow Scale

We all would like to have an accurate scale for bow making but how do you know what you are buying?  The first Pelouze spring scale I bought was way off; it measured 50 lbs. when it was really 56 lbs.  I hate errors like that and it went back.  Next I bought a cheap digital from Proscale and it seemed accurate.  I finally shelled out $125 to have a Pelouze 7710 digital scale sent to me.  Here are the two in a photo.



I have access at work to National Bureau of Standards traceable weights so I took them to work and we tested them both.

The 7710 is dead on.  From 10 to 60 lbs. at each ten pound increment it read exactly xx lbs. 0 oz.  At 70 lbs. it measured 69 lbs. 14 oz.  It is specified to be within 0.25 lbs.

The cheaper scale read heavy by 1.1 lbs. at 50 and 1.56 lbs. at 65.  The error was less at lighter weights and it was basically on at 10 lbs.

Now I know I have an accurate scale.  I would conclude that if you want good readings buy the Pelouze 7710.  The latest Martin catalog has the same Pelouze scale with their name on it but the price is a lot higher from them than Gemplers.  And yes, it is made by commies in China but it seems most everything else is now made there.
