I forged this blade from a 1 1/8" round bar of Cru Forge-V, a high carbon forging steel made specifically for the forging knife maker.
The handle is a spectacular example of stabilized end-grain, spalted Pecan from south Georgia.
It seems that nearly 49 out of 50 of my hunting knives are made in a take-down fashion.
This knife is #50.
It will be forever in a fixed assembly condition.
I used this knife in a recent demonstration of knife assembly techniques. I still used almost every step in the process of take-down - from the threaded finial, tang and pinned guard assembly. (I use this option for my knife making 'freedom' while making the knife.)
But, this one will finally get epoxied in a fixed assembly.
The finial assembly hole in the handle butt will be filled with a plug of the same spalted Pecan from the mother-material.
This knife should offer the owner many, many years of service.

When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Actually, it's still at a point where I could make it a take-down with a rather decorative finial cover.
I might just do that.
When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

I made a new finial and terminated it with a piece of Mammoth Ivory and a decorative screw.
Nice and clean.

Someday...someday...someday I will own one of your beautiful takedowns. That's a piece you buy for the generations.  Beautiful as always, Karl!

My goodness I never knew I wanted a spalted pecan handled knife till today.  That is the most fantastic knife ever..  I want.

I understand what you guys are saying - since making knives from 1996, that piece of handle material easily sits in the top five.
Nature did good on that one.
