all the pictures did not get on....Sorry---On the tang stamp---Howard cutlery-Germany....In the middle of the blade is stamped with 2 german words with Prussia below that---There is an X on both sides of it with EXNT stamped around it....

Rick, it appears to be a Gesitlich Geshützt Prussian butcher knife, an antique. I saw one on **** for around $96 asking price. Don't know much more about them.

reddogge, that's not the brand. It's the German equivalent of "patent protected". The brand is, as Rick described, a Howard Cutlery knife.

Take a look at his later post.

I took the knife to a gun show this weekend & looked around for someone that looked like they may know what I've got here & found a older gentleman that looked it over pretty good.He said 1860 era.Trade knife. He said most people would think its a butcher knife but in fact its a fighting knife. He said in the 1800s tradeing posts would order these knives & trade them to trapers -mountain men etc.for furs...

Thanks, I should have read more carefully. That potentially is some great background on that knife.

When you type you can be more German by holding down the ALT key plus 129 on number pad to get an umlauted u like this ü.
