My knife work bench in my garage can best be described as an "Organized Mess". In that confused array of "stuff", I spotted my set of checkering tools that I used last on a custom stock for my Ruger Red Label 20 ga. over/under shotgun. I suddenly had the urge to work on a hand checkering project, so here it is: A hidden tang D2 tool steel (Rockwell 60C) with very nicely figured stabilized Koa from Hawaii. Resin impregnated Koa made it kind of tough to work on, but I was happy with the result.  Mike O.

Very nice Mike, like it a lot.  I just located my checkering tools while attempting to clean up my cave. Will have to give it a try as well.

I tried checkering one time on a set of 1911 grips.  Disaster.  I may have to practice a little and give it a try on a knife.  That looks great.

Matt,
Yep! I made practice checkering on some walnut pieces before I started on my last shotgun stock, and I found out that "rushing" and "Checkering" definitely does NOT go together.  Mike O.

I love that whole package.  EXCELLENT job all the way around.  You do good work.  :)

I've tried (and failed) quite a few times to learn to checker. That is some beautiful work!
