Hey all,

As my first dip in the "knife making" pool I'd like to try getting a finished blade, or one that needs sharpening, and add a handle to it.  I think this would be the best way to try it.

I'd like to know who you all suggest makes a good BUSHCRAFT style blade of about 4 inches that I can get to try.  I can't afford those really nice damascus blade or other custom made blanks.

Any suggestions on where or whom I should take a look at?

Thanks for the help.

helle is a great option and there are a few others.  but most dont make knife blanks that are thick enough for what i would call  a bush craft knife.  i like one about a 1/4 thick so you dont have to worrie about a break at all.  for what you want you could get an old file and do all the work yourself with very minimal tools. and if you can find somebody close they can help you with the heat treat that the tricky part.  good luck and there alot of guys that make my bank of knowledge look empty so no shortage on good advice.

I bought a blank from James Noble. Nice blank. It was about $50 shipped. They used to have 01 tool steel and carbon, but it looks like only Damascus now.

Take a look at an Enzo Trapper.  It is 01 tool steel with a scandi grind.  I just got one and so far I am pleased with it, however I have not put it to any real use.

Helle or Kellam knife blades would be my choice. They are very reasonably priced and are great blades. I have a Helle knife that has become my constant companion. Easy to sharpen and they get scarey sharp. I'm looking at some blades now for my own build.
