I have been looking for tools to start making my own knives. i just need some advice on where to find them and what i should be looking for.

Many of the knife supply places (you can google and find pages) sell not only supplies but grinders, heat treat equipment etc...

It just depends on how into the process your going to get, like anything else it  can be as simple.... or as complicated as you make it.

I was looking at just getting a small forge and some hammers, but just wanted to see what advice i could get on the which direction to take. thanks

I would recomend a search on the web for sites that sell forges and equipment to make forges.  Research making your own post anvil.  A few ball peens and a 2 or 3 lb sledge will get you started.  Get the sledge with a straight peen or a cross peen.  Round the edges and polish the hammer faces.

I made my own forge from parts from Zoeller Forge and designs on the web.  I used pipe from a metal scrap yard.  Refractory houses will sell the high heat mortar and kaowool that you need for lining the forge.

Craigslist will be your friend.  Keep an eye out for bench grinders, anvils, belt grinders, and other items your shop will need.
