Trade knife

Well i finally made one for myself to keep. This isn't a new design for me, but i'm pretty well stoked to have it staying home. O-1 (as usual for me), curly maple and copper. Finaly got a leather groover so I was excited for this sheath as well. Please bear with a proud papa...

Nathan, that is most excellent! I like everything about that knife and sheath! The maple is pretty and that Spanish notch is a nice detail!

What stain did you use on the maple please?

Jeff-I just looked up the dates on the shoot, Argh!! I'm gonna be in WY that weekend. I cant say that I'm disappointed to be going to WY, but why couldnt it be another weekend???

I'd love to meet up for another shoot though. Plus that would be a great excuse to pick your brain on a few things knife related as well.

Steve, I wrote down my recipe, cause I figured I'd forget(which I promptly did). I'll dig up my notebook and post it on here tomorrow hopefully. I know I used alcohol based leather dye and a minwax stain of another color. I luckily have a big slab of curly that I experimented all over.

Jeremy- Thats good old plain french's mustard. Put it on "REAL" thin and then pull it up into little peaks with your fingertip. Anywhere thats yellow wont really be affected, the clear spots are where it darkens. Must be an aerobic reaction of some sort and the mustard seed paste prevents Oxygen from reaching the surface. The other spots are free to be affected by the acetic acid and air. Just my guess. Nothing like fitting my hypothesis to the results eh? Probably dont want to repeat that to anyone since its probably way off base

Drew, If anything ever "happens" to your sheath, I could always make you a new and improved one!

Steve, i looked up the procedure i used and good thing I wrote it down cause it wasnt what I thought. Here goes: first i whiskered it 3 times with rubbing alcohol, next i soaked in linsed for 5 min and then wiped clean. Next I applied Fiebings dark brown(#124) for 3 mins.wiped clean and repeated the linseed soak one more time. After it dried for a few days and stopped sweating, i hit it with my buffing wheel and some beeswax. Thought for sure I used the minwax, but i did a whole ton of practice spots on this one, so this must have made it pop the best for me.

Thanks Nathan, interesting procedure and I like the results. I would not have thought the stain would take well after soaking in linsed oil! Now I need to write it down!

Nathan That Curly wood looks frikin beautiful..And O-1 is a great steel its one that keeps ticken long after those others give in.
Man my Sis may need to take some sheath lessons from you...Wow I thought Mass was only good for tea parties.. Not to often I WANT SOMEONE ELSES KNIFE...
