Post Vise Help

I apologize for my recent absence. I have bought a new house, trying to salvage my job, and had a crap ton of tornados up this way.

Yesterday I found a Post Vise at a local flea market. I got it for $30.





It does not have its spring. Do any of yall have some advice on how to replace it?

Eye ball another post vice that has one and forge a new one for your vice. I use mine without a spring and it works just fine.  I set the post so the vice is angled slightly so the jaws open by gravity.  

Good score for $30.  They are usually $90 or more around my area.

im not too familiar with spring tempers so i may just use it without.

I bet I know where you could make a dollar or two off of it..  That is a good score there.

Cody - I have not done it but I imagine it you forges a longish U or V shape from spring steel and added a little clip either forged or just welded to hold it in place it sould work??  Just heat to critical and quench.  As long as you make it so that there is limited movement(you only need a coule inch gap) I cannot imagine it would crack in use.  Take this from someone who has not done it but I certainly would try bacause you have nothing to loose.  If it does fail you can use the steel for knives later.  

all that said, if you can make it work w/o a spring then less is best :-)
