Also for general purpose tongs what would you suggest? I like the vbit bolt tongs. They look like they will handle nearly everything

paid $75.00 for it on the auction site
there was 1 recently @ an estate sale that went for over 100.00 in a lot worse shape than mine
too rich for my blood
they are around just gotta find them and are they in your price range

,try to contact local blacksmith organizations and make some contacts. EVERY blacksmith i've met has a few of everything in their shop....they are a "junk collecting " bunch . Make some calls and you'll find some blacksmiths willing to part with tools.

the only problem... No smiths! I'm kinda far away from a population center that harbors people with eccentric hobbies. But there should be plenty in Minneapolis.. which is 5 hours away. It would be worth the drive for a good deal one though...

Research the nearest hammer in or blacksmith gathering around your area. Lots of folks bring things like post vises to sell at the hammer ins. I gave Gudspeler my spare one. Dang thing was just laying around in my shop. I figured a new bladesmith would put it to use where I would just keep moving it out of the way.

Look up a Chapter of ABANA near you. They usually have gatherings a couple of times a year. Usually you can find anything you want..post vises, anvils, tools etc. i know there is a big meet at Tanner Hill each spring...Doc

Scott, you never know where or how many smiths are near you 'til you start to look . i live in a rural (4000 people) county. takes 1 hour to get to the 4 lane and when I started to make contacts .....stuff is closer than I thought at good prices...plus those old blacksmiths are some of the coolest smartest guys i've met ...most closer than 5 hours .

Here's what I did with my post vise, and it's one of the handiest tools I have when I'm forging or making Damascus, Brut de Forge blades or just simply tweaking things.
I welded up a vertical new piece of rail, a block of steel on top of the rail which has the mass of a large anvil when combined, and put the whole thing on wheels, Just tip it back and roll it wherever it's needed.
The whole thing must weigh about 350 pounds, but balances well when on wheels.

Well I was wondering what a post vise was,I thought I would have to ask my old smithy(khalverson) but alas,Karl comes throgh for me. All that said,I have one of them in a bucket or two.need to figure out what I can use it for and how to put it back together.Mine appears to be in great shape. What or how are they used?

Go back to my pictures and see how it has a plate sticking off the side for mounting to a flat surface?
This is different than a vise that would normally just mount right onto the top of a bench.
This is so it sticks out from the bench, and then there's the "leg", which is why these are often called a "leg vise".
This leg transfers any energy from hammer blows to the ground, rather than shaking up everything else around.
Do searches for "leg vise" in your searches as well.
Blacksmiths use these often to grab their work pieces for bending and twisting, etc. since so much of their work involves such things.

I will check mine out and see if I can set it up. Maybe a local smith would need it more than me.It seems it is for,how shall I say,less delicate work than bow making.I sometimes want to give a bow a few blows from a hammer, but then I just sand a little longer...

you wouldnt have an anvil or 2 layin around would ya
say maybe a 250 # er
or a power hammer hidin somewhere
or maybe a 20 ton hydraulic press

just thought is ask before i search high and low and then find out some one i know has just what i need stashed in a shed
