wood hardener question

Went to the local store and what they had for wood hardener was Elmer's brand and looked like white school glue.  Didn't think this was what I was looking for.
What brand hardener do you buy, and what does it look like?  
Don't have a HD here but going to a town where there is one on Thursday.
