It seems i have the bug to build a knife but have not a clue how to get started.I dont want to be pain in #%%@** asking a bunch of dumb question. What books would you recommend for a 1st time beginner? Something on the simple side. I have access to some saw mill blades, i`ve herd they are great for knife making, but would like cut my teeth on something else first. Thanks

Sawmill blades are just one thing you CAN make knife blades from. That method may not be the end of the process for you. You may want to try forging or start with demensional bar stock.

I recommend Wayne Goddard's book. "The $50 Knife Shop".

Another book is Tim McCreight's book "Custom Knifemaking 10 projects from a master craftsman"
You can look at the different projects and decide which kind of knife fits your tools and abilities and go from there.

Think about where you want to be as a maker in a year and work toward that. Lin

If it was me and I had access to a saw mill blade that is what I would use, lots of knives in one saw mill blade.

also lawn mower blades make great knives although
maybe a bit thick for a first knife

my recomendation is get some 0-1 that is annealed and then heat treat it yourself instead of working hardened saw blades.

Thanks guys this should get me started, i believe forging is out for now. As far as tools i have a grinder an figure on buying some files an maybe barrow a sander from a buddy. Thanks again i`m sure i will be posting some question sooner or later
