I use a folding knife over 50 times a day on average, whether I'm in the leather shop or out hunting I use the same blde design and most always a folder.
If I'm skining furbearers I'll use a fixed blade caper that I'm fond of.

Here's my problem. Puma has discontinued the blade design I've used for several years now.  :(   I'm not the only one thats in a panic, a couple other guys have been getting the same folder from me and like me the Puma stainless is the only stainless that they like.

My idea is to order one of the folder kit's from Texas Knife works, pitch the 440 blade and put a O1 toolsteel blade in it's place, the shape I'm used to.

Ya think it's do-able? I got a year left in my last Puma, I wear one out a year. Anyone a folder expert that can give me some pointers if I get stuck?

Can you post up some pics of the Puma please. There's a couple of dealers in the UK that hold some large stock of Puma knives. It may be worth looking at buying a few (If they've got any left!) I may be able to suggest some alternatives too. There's a bit of a resurgence in the Sheffield knife making scene going on, especially traditional 'Sheffield' folders. Makers like Trevor Ablett are building some stunning old-style (Proper) pocket knives at very, very good prices.
If I can see what you're after, I'll try & help out with any alternatives Robin.

I think I have a picture in this computer somewhere. I'll see if I can find it and get it on here. It had the utility drop point blade with a straight grind instead of puma's hollow ground clip point.

I have a dealership on puma knives (thats how many I bought) but twice now they have discontinued styles that had that blade and all stock was gone when I ordered.

The handle that I and others like is thin and adds very little bulk in a back pocket or on a cross draw sheath. I'll see if I can add a picture this morning.

Found the dang pics at last, buried in a hunting folder.
They call it the Hobbytec Rob, with a drop point blade. The handle has a shape the holds it well in a formed leather side sheath. The cowboys like this cross draw as it gets the knife outta the way of thier roping but still handy to get to if they need to cut a rope.

The open blade has about half a years use on it, they have a bit more belly to them new. They have a pretty slim handle, not much bulk when I carry it in a back pocket.

Puma still carries this knife with the clip point blade. You'll get your finger every time opening up a critter's belly.

Thanks to you guys I'm good for a few more years. I'll use the time to try to learn to make folders.
