thought i woudl ask a few people in the know... I have come across a mess of old honey wagon (manure spreader) steps, these are on a chain that brings teh manure to the flails, i'm thinking that they are spring steel and seem to be at least 1/8" thick. think they could be any good?

From experience (I'm an agricultural engineer by trade) they're usually mild steel, so they don't wear through the floor of the spreader. Carbon steel spreader bars would soon eat their way through the trailer deck.
