HH bug got me ... Part One!

I started out with a HHA deluxe glove and shot with it for years.  I hate that glove.  I love HHA bows but do not like that glove.  To each their own.  I added this for the newbies so they would have another opinion.  I do though like my American Leathers glove.  It's perfect FOR ME.

I just finished shooting my Schulz American Longbow again. I gotta say that bow is amazing! So 'plain looking' in a world of exotic veneers etc... but it just comes alive in your hand when you shoot it and the arrows slam into the point you're looking again. Magic! This is why I've come to love these bows so much!

I'm with Brazos on the glove issue. I could never get the feel of the HH glove, but love my Am. Leathers Crossover. Different strokes for different folks.

I shoot a HH glove modified, I cut a 1/4" off the ends so my fingers stick out just a bit, I like to feel my finger at the corner of my mouth and no plastic inserts.  Been shooting these gloves since the mid 80's " to each his own"!

I've been tempted to do that with my Batemen double cordovan but I haven't given it a real good chance at breaking in yet. Still real stiff on the fingers, hoping over time it will loosen up.

I'd like it to be easier to control, having the double thickness might be good for keeping your fingers feeling good but the lack of sensitivity to the string is slightly unnerving at times.

Ross, I can appreciate what you say about the Schultz. I just built an Bamboo backed Ipe bow, more English style than HH, however, as you say, point it  where you want to hit and the arrow seems to go there. There is a shallow string follow on this bow, 1/2 - 1" but sure enhances the shooting - likely not as fast but likes a heavy arrow.

Brazos, I agree - gave the HH glove a real try, still have it, but the American Leathers is my choice. I have a Sam tab to back it up in case the  AL disappears.

HH bug still has me after season close here in NC.

I am tinkering with deepening the straight grip on my HH Big Five. I used a product called Vet Wrap to wrap a felt strip on the back of the bow at the handle to deepen the grip. Vet wrap is great stuff. It comes in an array of colors.



Anyway, I was away all day but got home at about 530pm with a little daylight left. I shot some with the new grip depth and it feels good. After about 30 minutes of shooting at the target butt I decided to shoot the four arrows at the 3D target. It makes the grip 2.5". Not sure it's gonna work, but it's looking good. I want to try 2.25" and see how it goes. 2.5 seems just a bit much.

Hey, good shooting Bud. I'm just the opposite I guess,I like the shallower handle on my Wesley blackwood string follow than i do on my Wesley reflex. The reflex bow is deeper and I can;t seem to get a consistent grip with it. I like to get my hand all the way around the grip.

  As to gloves, I like my 3R durra glove, enough protection, but i can feel the string real well. I need to feel that string or i can;t shoot well or consistently.I let the string come of my ring finger which stays pretty calloused, but it works for me.

Funny how things vary from person to person. I'm with Bud in that when I went to a deeper grip I found it really cleaned up m shooting and ensured very consistent hand placement.

Are you shooting straight, dished or locator on your bow Dave?

I have a Old Tom and love it. It is taking some getting use to the Hill style grip. I shot some kind or another locater grips all my life. I thought about seeing if Dave could modify it to a locater style. But then again that does take away from the HH style bow.

Vet wrap is really great stuff. I put a layer around my riser before attaching a strap on bow quiver when I'm forced to use one. You can use it over the straps and really anchor the quiver, absolutely no movement. Works great for grip modifications which you already have discovered.

Net arrow length question.

I was reading in the Schulz book last night about this topic.  John said Howard would measure his blunts so the .38 casing rim was up against the back of the bow.  He also said his broadheads were left a little longer.

So all the .38s I have weighed are less than a HH broadhead...and with the extra length to boot...... so does that mean Howard used different spines for his target vs hunting arrows?  

Seems to me if he used the same spine the lighter and shorter blunt arrow would be stiffer than the longer and heavier broadhead arrow if they were identical spines.

BTW - that book is a great read!  John is the Man!

Good question. I'd assume he used different spined arrows to get the tune right but ?.

Maybe Howard used the .38 casing over a field blunt. That would add just enough more weight to shorten the same spine arrow. Just a thought.
