I stopped by a friends place tonight to pick up a new string and take a look at his herd. This friend owns a scent company and that is why he has deer, but my guess is he would keep some even if he didn't need them for scent. Anyway, he had a visitor there that was loaned to him for stud service. take a guess from the pictures how old this deer is.

BTW - I know there are some here that disagree with raising captive deer, but rest assured that no deer were harmed in the making of this thread.  :)  These deer are not being raised to be sold off to game farms. this buck will probably live to a ripe old age having only to endure the indignation of having to pee in a bottle and impregnate any doe my friend "forces" him to.    :p

Holding out on us eh? Can't give a fair judging by the rack and from what I can see, not much belly sag there. Them well fed/great genetics bucks are to hard to judge with these pics. But I would go with the 2.5 if forced to guess on these alone, but I'm guessing your holding out for a reason so 1.5.

Vermonster, you take all the fun out of it. Yes he's 1.5

here's a couple more pics;

He really is amazing. of course his father was over 200 inches as a 2.5, so go figure.

I am going to say this is a 1 1/2 maybe 2 year old buck. Short nose, no gray color anywhere on the face, no real body mass yet. He must come from a Great gene pool & be fed well to get a rack that nice & be that young.
Skull even looks a little narrow yet & eyes are still fairley close togather.

Sure hope that loaner didn't come from Wisconsin. I'm far more concerned about the risk of disease transmission to wild herds than I am about well-being of captive deer. There was already one CWD outbreak in NY...

Jeff Hren-Renegade

Damn! Right after I hit the button you answer. At least I was right.

Dustin Waters

He is a young deer im going to go with 1.5-2.5 its hard telling but he looks generally young in the face... Where are the wensels when you need them?

vermonster13

Hehe. If you'd posted those shots to begin with you know it would have been over quick. LOL

Steve, he's NY born and raised. Actually I'm pretty sure that NY passed a law prohibiting animals from being brought in or taken out because of CWD concerns.

What's the dot on the left side of his nose?

I would have said 2-1/2  to be safe but was thinking he looked very young in the first picture... On a game farm, I am not surprised a 1-1/2 could do so well. That is what low stress and good food can do. I too was wondering about the dot on his nose.

pretty impressive for 1.5 take away the antlers and the face looks at least that young if not younger. thanks for sharing.

Deerhntr

I'd say 2.5. No gray no sway back pot belly. Nice young buck.
