I know a guy who has what I believe is a 57 Kodiak special it's 53 @ 28.  If he ever sells it to me what could I expect to be able to reduce the weight too?

I had the Bow Hospital reduce a longbow and they said that 10% is generally the max.  I suppose recurve reduction would be similar, so expect to lose about 5#.

there isn't alot of meat on a "57--narrow with big recurve-might get unstable real fast

Bamboo is correct. You will either learn to like that weight or find one in the weight you need. Have you shot this bow? The Kodiak Specials are longer(62" to 70") and very smooth.
1957s don't seem to be as common as some of the other year Bear Kodiak Specials, but a 56 or 58 is pretty easy to come by. Most are lighter weights.

I haven't shot it, I just been telling the guy from time to time when he sells it I want it. I'm not sure it's a 57 that is what he told me. He only brought it out one time to let me see it but that was a couple years ago, I was talking with him the other day and my interest was sparked again.

Get one in the weight you want is my suggestion 45# is most common.
