I am cleaning up a 1963 Black Widow for a family member. Grandpa decided black electrical tape would make a good string keeper and it left a black residue when I removed the tape and replaced the string.

What would be a good way to remove the tape gunk without messing up the glue joint for the overlays?

Thanks

cover girl 100% acetone finger nail polish remover and green scotch-brite (walmart a total cost of about 4 bucks or less) that will take tape residue right off.Be very careful and scrub gentley or you may scrub off some of the original finish ......... got pics ???? bd

Goof-Off is even better than Goo-Be-Gone. It won't harm finishes.

Thanks for info!

Grandpa's bandaid attachment for the brush rest is another nice touch I hope to improve on.      :)

I twisted up a new string for it and dug out my 1970's fiberglass hunting arrows and it shoots great.

What a great bow, especially since it belonged to your grandfather.Enjoy shooting it.

Actually not my grandfather but grandfather on the inlaws side (does that make sense?).  I'm the only bowhunter so I got the bow for now.

There are great grandsons that I've been teaching to shoot. They should grow into this bow in a few years. One of the kids is a heck of a shot with a Maddog pup.

Awesome bow!    Getting the kids hooked early is smart, and how cool will it be when they eventually hunt with their great Grandfathers bow.

I would have to agree with Goof-Off. I used it to remove masking tape that was 25+ years on a
X-60 Wilson Bros and worked great when the others did not.

Like Don implied do not try too hard because sometimes the tape impregnates itself into the finish and cannot be totally removed. Sometimes it presses into the finish and leaves a visible impression but does come off. Sometimes It has protected the wood from light so it is a different color under the tape so again watch to not get carried away thinking the different color is that you have not removed enough tape residue. I like the cover girl acetone finger nail polish remover best because it is gentle on your bows finish and on your nails bd

Charcoal lighter fluid is a great tape goo remover. Most guys usually have some around for the grill so it is at hand.

It is my opinion that using denatured alcohol would the best as it leaves no residue and only lightly dulls the original finish which would buff with a good car polish and would be as shiny as new! Good luck with your project a very worthy one at that! Nice looking piece of history in your hands. Jacques A. Bonin

upper limb tip overlay
since the string does not touch this area once it's strung I've been stringing it on to the lower limb

Would a sawdust/glue mixture fix this? I'm trying to avoid replacing the entire overlay.
