59 Kodiak Special

Hello all new here. Just have a question on this bow I picked up the other day .The bow says 45# @ 26 inches is that common on this bow? From all the info I have read they were all rated at 28" any help would be appreciated

Many of the shorter length Kodiak Specials were rated at 26".  What is the length and year of your KS?

Forgot to mention at the Fred bear online site it shows the draw length as correct for a 64"bow  but also says they were all weighed at 28"

hmmmm...I've only seen @ 26" on 60" and 62" Kodiak Special but I havent seen near as many as some of the other collectors.  Maybe they will comment as well.

Could have been a special order maybe. I don't know.

If a bow was custom ordered would be marked at the draw length it was ordered.  I've had a few that were marked at 26" and one that was marked at 27"... still looking for one marked at 30"

Some of the shops like Northwest Archery did stock a few bows that were marked @ 24 26 28 30.One reason was there was always the guy who had the 24 26 30 whatever draw length and felt that unless that bow was marked at his draw length it would not work.
99.9% of all Bear bows were tillerd at 28" no matter what was writen on the bow.Yap anything custom orderd was custom marked in your draw length also.Got any pics of it yet ???? bd

I have often heard reference here to Northwest Archery, does anybody have a picture of it or dates of operating?

Jeremy, Doc - You are correct, custom ordered bows were marked as ordered.

Interesting discussion. You guys just prompted me to check and handle some 1954 to 1960 Kodiaks & Kodiak Special Deluxes. Always a great way to start a day... In a quick search, I found a dozen marked at lengths other than 28#, but many are duplicate bow length and draw length.

This list is arranged by draw length from 30" down to 25", far right column...

70" -  43# @ 30"
64" -  48# @ 29"
68" - 100# @ 27"
60" -  51" @ 26"
62" -  24# @ 25"

This list is arranged by bow length, far left column...
(Same 5 bows listed above that are rearranged with one bow added)

70" -  43# @ 30"
68" - 100# @ 27"
64" -  48# @ 29"
62" -  24# @ 25"
60" -  51" @ 26"
56" -  44# @ 26"

Jeremy - Only found one marked @ 30".

Doc - Didn't find any marked @ 24". You probably better put that on my needs list.

All collectors are crazy...

Just happened to see this one, nearly forgot about it on the rack...

Have you seen many Bears marked  @ 28"  ???

28 would certinly be the odd duck.I've only seen one 1960 Kodiak marked 45@28.bd

Grip was replaced when I got it but I think the specs are original.

Hey Trap whats that scratched into the riser looks like 5 mm or is that he number of deer its killed .

I can't tell for sure.

It appears to be 5'6" but that doesnt make any sense.  

Maybe the intended number was 56" (length of string)

I don't know.  The bow has a very small grip, like it was made for a woman's hand.  

Under the leather grip it says in ink.
