Around twenty years ago when I was out shooting in the yard a guy delivering a piano next door came over and told me he was state champ back in the sixties and I needed to shoot 3under if I was ever going to be any good. I tried it and went back to split...anyhow I don't keep up with the big 3d shoots. Is Rick Welch shooting 3under unusual ? Are there comparably good split finger shooters in the major tournaments?

Bill Leslie II

Fransisco Flecha,Kieth Bain,Ken Redding,Brain Bishop,Jack Rhudy,Howard Hill just to name a few.

Andy Diggs

Thanks Bill...I don't keep up with tournament shooting and i guess I was just wondering if it was dominated by three under shooters.

Hornseeker

Do you shoot split Bill?

Ernie

I'm no champ of any sort, I'm not even a good shot. My most recent score on the 3D course is 147 on a 20 target course.  That being said, being just an average Joe, my accuracy is way different shooting split finger vs. 3 under.  I started out shooting 3 under when I got into this just two years ago, and that's how I'll shoot from now on.

There's no reason why you can't accomplish your goal either way....there's plenty of great split finger shooters out there.....

Howard Hill shot split.....RC

Well ,Howard had tried all those methods years ago.He says in Hunting the Hard way 3 under will bring the arrow up just under the dominant eye and so the line up to the target is much easier to see and accuracy/precision should be better.Hill ran into some great formal archer that bested his shots at static set ranges. So he then suggested changing things up -adding some difficult shots. I dont know whether that was moving targets or unknown distances or timed speed shots but he blew past all of them with his split fingered style. For me I just dont like the lack of control with 3 under. So I sacrifice a bit of accuracy for that. Everything is a trade off I guess.

Not to sound too dumb on the subject but until I really got into trad. archery over the last few years I didn't even know 3 fingers under even existed! At the local elementary school they have a turkey shoot each year which I help at and in gym class they teach them all the 3 under technique. I have never even tried it....I guess that gives me something to do this afternoon.

Keith Bain is an awesome shot split finger.  He has over the years many times posted the highest score for a tournament shooting a longbow with wood arrows.  Depends on what works for you!
