Bamboo backed static build along

JD,

It looks like the slat is tapered in the last few inchs where you bend it.  Is that just an optical illusion caused by the aluminum banding?

Also, I assume you just need a piece of banding about 12" long, that is a yard stick cut into 3 pieces.  The backing and clamp must try to "walk" up the slat as you bend.  Do you clamp it way tight or just let it slip a little?

I think I mention on one of the pic's about the strap being a yard stick cut in 3 pieces:)  also mentioned the reason for clamping the strap before you make the bend, but I didn't mention how thick the bend area is thanks bud:) I taper the last 8" to around 3/8"... Just got in from work... gonna relax abit and head to the shop to look at some bamboo.

JD, That's some really good stuff!  All those little tidbits (like boiling w/ the strap on, clamping the strap prior to the bend, and heat torching, etc.) are the things that make a project work versus fail.  Thanks alot for posting.    :D

It's also nice to see different methods folks use during building, like tapering the Boo on a power sander vs. planing. I'm just starting my 1st BBO and even though it's not a static recurve, I'm hoping to gain a lot of valuble info. and watchouts from your postings/pics.  Thanks for the build along!

Stick & String your right theres all kinds of ways and technics when building a simple lam bow, everything about my statics including the glue-up form mirrors my Phenom r/d flatbow all thats different is the static tips.

That statement was made as a compliment to the generosity and expertise of a man who makes awesome bows,is a true expert at it (in my opinion one of the top 3 wood bow builders in the country), and could make a living from doing it. (as opposed to a wood hack like myself)

Dang now ya got me wanting to build a dang static and I don't even like recurves.    
Nice tip on the use of dry heat while the wood is on the cull.  I'll try that on the selfbows that I straighten on a cull.

I sure would like to come up one of these weekends and learn a thing or two.

Now get to work and finish this thing.

I can't believe I spent all that time rasping my bamboo down to near thickness, when I had the bandsaw sitting there.  That alone was worth the time reading this thread.  And I like the additional heating of the bent area, I do this a lot of times when I have a piece of wood on a form.  Although, I think I've actually got some stuff too dry from being overly zealous about heat treating.  Too dry resulting in that popping sound you hear just before your bow becomes a volunteer takedown.

Lennie... just be carefull when using the bandsaw for reducing the boo, might not have any boo left on one side:) Also when I add dry heat to the bending area I'm realy just heating the metal strap which helps from not scorching the osage.
