Snuffers and 45#

Who has used Snuffer heads and draw weights around 45# on deer? They are flying nice out of my RER XR on arrows that are 12 gr per pound. Any issues with penetration for those that have used similar setups?

I've taken several deer with Snuffers. Last year I took a whitetail buck with my #45 recurve and a Snuffer. The broadhead lodged in the opposite leg joint after one lung and a heart pass through. Shot was quartering away from a 15ft high treestand. The buck went about 80 yards and piled up. Blood trail Ray Charles could follow. Shame that the Snuffers are no longer being made.  :(

Oh yeah, my arrow setup was 10.5 gpp and I draw a true 28". I took that Snuffer and touched up the blades with a file and cardboard and its as good as new.

Snuffers is one of those time-tested broadheads, that are right up there in the top 3 blade heads. When I used to shoot 55-60 #, I used the Big Daddy snuffer that would produce an 1 1/2" hole. Now since I am at 48-50#, I shoot the woodsman or the Grizzly Instinct, which are a more stream-lined head. They will all do an excellent job, if you do your part, but with my set up I prefer the later two.

I've shot deer and hogs with snuffers, 4 blade muzzy phantoms and palmer extreme cuts which look like a oversized phantom and have had no problems at all.
I used a palmer recurve 47lbs at my 26" draw. Arrow was a heritage 150 that came in around 515 grs

Never shot Snuffers, but the Wensel Woodsman 3 blade, mounted on Arrow Dynamic 29" shafts, flies great out of my 60", 47@28" Cari-bow "Tuktu" recurve.

Last year I used the vpa 3 blade shooting a 47# longbow and 500 grain arrow. Got complete penetration with no problem. My draw is 26.5. I think arrow has definitely got to be in the right spot too. If it's a shoulder hit probably would've been a different story.

Yes sir Buckeye.. and the be quite Frank and honest that draw weight at that draw length on a shoulder hit probably wouldn't have mattered much no matter what Broadhead.

125 gr with 75 gr screw in adapter. Gold Tip 500 weighing 540 gr coming out of a 45# @ 28" RER XR recurve.

As Terry asked what's your draw length?

Makes a huge difference on a head that big.

I have a 30.5" draw and like woodsman for deer.

Ok so 28" and 45# I would say it's marginal.

I'd go with a Grizzly 3 blade or a Woodsman to get the second hole.

For me penetration is all about the exit hole and the exit hole is about recovering game.

When my boys were young they used 125 grain snuffers on their 40 and 45# bows and had no problem on deer and bear . Plenty of penetration and good blood trails  far better than the two blades they were using.

I agree with Wingnut.  In my opinion, 45# is pretty marginal for a large, wide broadhead like a Snuffer.  Snuffers are deadly heads but they need sufficient energy to get complete penetration.  When shooting bows under 50#, I think maximum penetration is the objective when choosing arrow and broadhead to shoot with it.
