Tembo question

I am getting ready to order my second HH longbow.  I currently have a Cheetah, but this time I am getting a Tembo.  My question is about limb tip overlays.  Any advantage/disadvantage to having them on a bow or are they mostly cosmetic? Your thoughts are welcome.

They are just an alternative to the wedges.  Cosmetic.

Craig usually incorporates the wedges into the limbs regardless of whether he adds overlays or not, unless the buyer asks him not to do so.

I personally like the overlays.  Look nice, provide additional strength and not heavy enough to affect arrow speed enough to worry about.

He's right, I noticed my current Mamba Craig thickened the center Cocobolo lam toward the tips to basically act as a wedge, and then did ebony tip overlays.  I studied some pics of a few of the other Hills Ive had and in one of them the wedge sure was there right with the overlay.  Like Orion says, won't affect the speed at all.

I think they add unneeded weight to the tips and don't like the looks of them, but that is just my preference. I like really light sleder tips a la Schulz.

I have had them with tip overlays and without,I like the look with overlays.I still shoot a low stretch type string with either one.

Thanks for the responses.  My Cheetah has the wedge and cocobolo limb tips that match the handle.  I'll probably end up with tips that match whatever handle wood I choose.

Go for it!
It really doesn't affect the performance.

I have yet to see any data comparing limb tip wedges to overlays in performance / durability (comparing apples to apples)

I have an HHA Half Breed with wedges only and an Osage Royale (Chuck Jones) with both...same length, same draw wt @ 27".  Shoots the same arrows to the same point of aim.  The only discernable "feel" (for me) is the geometry of the grip (significant for me).

I have ASL's with and without overlays and I do prefer without...just because I like the cleaner lines. But this Tembo with ebony overlays on black glass is one of my favorites

Jim, that Tembo looks amazing with the ebony!  Does it have ebony in the handle?  I am trying to decide which handle wood.  I am leaning towards Bocote right now.

The handle is ebony also, white glass on the belly and black glass on the back

I just ordered a Tembo with ebony riser/black glass and went around and around on tip overlays and decided on bare tips.....mainly because my half breed has cocabolla riser and limb tips so just figured I'd get this one without......brilliant reasoning right....   :saywhat:

I have pretty much decided on black glass on the back and belly.  That ebony handle wood looks amazing!  I might do like Yohon and go bare tips.  Being a Ravens fan, Purpleheart and black glass might look really cool.  Never seen that combo.  These are the good decisions to have to make!

Thanks Tony.  I didn't think they would effect performance to any significant amount.  None that I would notice anyway.

I just ordered another Tembo.  I went with antler overlays, just because I like the looks of them.

Sorry to steal your thread, but is a Tembo a sting-follow?
-EVG

It can be string follow, straight or back set, your choice.

That should be one of a kind!!Look forward to pics of that. Bet you can count on one hand the number of Ravens fans that shoot a Hill LOL

Yohon, that's what I am hoping!  That's why we go custom, right?  Never seen one with purpleheart.  I am sure most Raven fans wouldn't know what to do with an HH bow
