Killed a big boar in California on Saturday.  As we prepped it we found a blue-purple object about 12 inches long.  Kept it and turned it over to the butcher.  I thought liver fluke, but it was attached to the stomach.  Butcher said it was safe to eat.  I am asking a guy at the university for a second opinion. Anybody run into this situation?

splenomegalaly (sp?) - enlarged spleen is all that means. I wouldn't stress it? maybe the hog had sickle cell disease? who knows.

How big a hog was it? 12" might not be too large? Let us know what the University says be cool info.

I do not eat any innards from any animal. Sorry, but just not appetizing to me. Wild Hogs, I would be very careful about eating any innards.

I'm with Danny.  No justifiable reason other than novelty to eat the offal off a wild hog IMHO.  Though to be clear perhaps you meant the animal in general?

So is he talking about actually eating the spleen, or wondering if the hog itself is safe to eat?

Ok, nevermind, I see you're actually talking about the spleen.  Didn't see your 2nd post.  I'd say toss that thing out.  No thanks.

I new a guy that had some type of cancer that ate hog spleen. He did it in a ceviche. Has some type of enzyme his body need to fight the cancer. He lived about 6 months longer than the dr said.

Sorry, I meant the rest of the hog as I do not eat spleens or lungs or tripe or liver or hearts or tongues from swine.

I don't even open up hogs or deer anymore.  Just skin and take the meat plus the inner loins... but no need to enter the abdomen even for those.

What Danny said! I don't eat nuts and guts. That's what God created buzzards and yotes for!

LOL that is what I thought you meant originally. I do eat liver and heart from other game animals but never have from a hog, domestic or otherwise.

Too many bows to list, and so many more I want to try!  Keep the wind in your face, and your broadheads sharp.

A farmer friend has some Mong come out and butcher his hernia pigs.  They get a griddle going while are doing.  They skin and eat bits and pieces of the whole hog for nourishment while they are working.  They even eat the ears.   Almost nothing is left behind.
