In! Using a decoy is a tactic ive been thinking on lately, hunting in the midwest. No use for them here in NC so im excited to learn.

Most of us have perfectly good decoys sitting in the yard daily. What is wrong with using a 3D target as a decoy? Wipe it down with a scent killer, and then spray with the appropriate pee, such as doe in estrus or dominant buck. Or use two of them and use both sprays.

This idea might not be practical for somebody who has to walk a long way to a stand. But for those of us whose stands are easily accessible, it can be both cost effective and productive. I use my turkey target in this manner. Now that I have a deer target, I may give that a try. Any thoughts?

I've done that Sam - and I have a full body decoy.....but it's heavy and loud.  I'm looking for quiet and convient.  Some places I walk in a good bit.

I use a Montana Decoy cow elk on my wilderness backpack elk hunt every September. She packs up small, weighs next to nothing and works very well. I set her up about 20 yards behind me and to the upwind side a bit and have experienced many elk "coming in" to my cow calls. IMO I've been presented better shots than what might have been without her. Bull elk are looking for the cow that made the cow calls and become very wary when no cow elk are seen.

I just picked up a Montana Fred Eichler front facing cow off another classified.  Going to give it a shot this September in CO.

The bull moose in my avatar fell to a 7 yd shot with my friend calling from behind a Montana cow moose decoy. He had left a cow to come to the calls - my buddy was 15 yds from him when the bull finally pulled up drooling and licking. When he decided he liked the real version better and turned to leave....
