Hi all, I've been useing mainly aluminums these days but have used POC's and chundoo shafts in the past and have always enjoyed making my own arrows. I'm considering making up some woods again and see some folks are selling hickory and poplar shafts. Just wondering how these stack up against POC as far as durability, straightness and how do they compare in weight. Thanks much, Craig

I compare Poplar with Chundoo in weight and strength and if you get Hickory they will be quite heavier but very durable.  Both Poplar and Hickory are more durable than POC.

Here is a comparison of some shafts in my stock.

My 11/32" Hickory shafts 33" long scale out around 650 - 700 grains each.

My 11/32" POC shafts 32" long weigh in around 350 - 450 grains each.

Hickory is a lot tougher (more durable) and heavier, though not as straight as cedar.  Poplar, too, is heavier, though it may not be any more durable.  I've had good results strightening hickory.  It's my favorite hardwood for heavy arrows for big critters, though I usually shoot cedars for targets and deer.

Check out Twig Archery . He has poplar,chundoo,and ramin hardwood.  Ramin is tuff as nails(and heavy).  He also has ramin in 5/16 up to 60#.  I agree with Aeronut.  Poplar is more durable than cedar.  Ramin doesn't show the grain like cedar.  Poplar doesn't show as much grain as cedar but takes stains better than the ramin.  If you are using hand-held taper tools the ramin will eat up your blades quick.  Tell John what weight you want your arrows and he can dial you in.  All his shafting are compress straightened,too.

Twig Archery is a good place to go. John is a good guy and is great to deal with.

Hickory and Ash are both heavy. And may mean your shots need to be a little closer. I have tried Doug Fir and they are a great shaft, stronger than POC and take to stain very well too.
