are there any longbows that compare to recurves in speed my only experience is with recurves
is it possible to have good speed with quiet that longbows are known for thanks Ralph.

sure.centaur, toelke, fedora mikuta, acs cx,just to name a few.these bows have a recurve style grip that make it easy to switch over from a recurve.

Golden Hawk

Jesse, Let's not forget about the RER Vortex which can also have a recurve grip as an option.

The absolute quietest bows I've ever shot were also the slowest--selfbows and straight limbed/mild reflex limbed longbows.  However, you can get a longbow that has comparable speed to most recurves with very little noise.  I average 187 fps with my longbow, shooting 9.5 grains per lb but I do have a long draw (30.5").  I get comments on a regular basis about how quiet my bow is.

Generally speaking, faster--whether by design or with a lighter arrow--is noisier.

Fast and slow, loud and quiet, are terms that are usually going to be determined by opinion.  A chrony will measure actual speed, but IMO anything over 175-180 fps is pretty fast.  I have some high frequency hearing loss, so I'll pick up on a low pitch more than high pitch.  I might say one bow is quiet when it's noisy to someone else, and vice-versa.

These days, when we say longbow we have to be specific. Hybrid, or reflex-deflex flatbows are currently very popular, and with good reason ... and they are considered longbows. I own two (plus a dozen I've made myself, which don't count in this discussion): a Black Widow PLIII, and a Thunderhorn. Both are 62" and 55# at 28", and both shoot right at 190 fps with 500-grain arrows. The BW wants to be loud and is a challenge to silence, while the Thunderhorn is the quietest bow I've ever shot at that speed. Could be the strings, different kinds of flast flight, have something to do with it. Anyhow, yes, there are many r-d longbows today that are comparable in speed and quietness (or lack thereof) to recurves, and have semi-recurve style grips. I think the hybrids embody the best of both designs. dave

I've only really know longbows, but I know that if properly built they can be quick shooters.  I forget the exact numbers, but my dad recently built one of his grizzlybows longbows that was somewhere around 60 @ 28 and shot a 500 gr arrow just over 200 fps.  I've seen lots of recurves that shoot slower than that.

The worst day shooting is better than the best day at work.

Take a look at a 3pcs longbow. Most of them have a riser just like a recurve. Great shooters and very stable. <><

I know Zippers LBs and recurves are within a couple of feet per second of each other. The Vortex is very quick and OLs bows and Centaurs shoot as faster and faster than the best recurves out there. I just got a Vortex that by my eye is as quick as any longbow I have shot. Shawn

I haven't heard anyone mention Horne's. Mark's longbows seem pretty quick to me.

I got a great secret to share with you if you're looking for a fast, quiet, stable T/D longbow hybred. I got one  of these with carbons limbs and it is the best.  www.Sapphirearchery

Black Swan would fit well in this list. Lots of great bows to choose from.

For hunting to have a future, we must invest ourselves in future hunters.

Cutty47

I've got a Sapphire coming myself.  Ernie is definitely an up and coming bowyer who's going to get a lot of recognition in the future.

I'd definitely put Turkey Creek longbows into the mix as well...and Doug's a sponsor here.

I just got a Dryad, and it is pretty damn fast.

The Widow PL is described as being "as fast" as thier recurves.  After shooting one (without putting it through a chrono) I'd have to say, they are extremely close.  It packed a pretty impressive punch for a longbow.

I have a 51# Treadway that shoots a 570 gr arrow very fast and hits very hard.
