I have a black walnut stump I dug out of my yard a good while back. Can I make a riser out of it and buy a good set of limbs and put on it? Would it be strong enough? Just knockin it around in my head.

I have no doubt that you can make a dandy riser out of that.  Find a good section of straight grain and have a go at it.

You may want to laminate a different wood into the riser; I had a solid walnut riser crack once.  The bowyer warned me against the solid riser when I ordered the bow, but I wouldn't listen and insisted on a solid riser.  A couple of years after getting the bow, after the warranty had expired, the riser cracked.  I sent the bow back and had him replace it, which he did.  However, he wouldn't let me pay for the replacement saying he should have insisted on laminating the riser.  Needless to say, I highly recommend Ric Anderson of Marriah Bows if you are looking for a good bow.

If it were me I would put a good bit of glass or phenolic in it so there would be no possibility of a break and injury.

Thanks for the help, I'm going to cut it up to see what it looks like. Maybe I should leave things like this to the experts.

I asked Bob Morrison about walnut and other native hardwoods.  He said he used them, but first had them injected with plastic by a company in Iowa.  That made them heavier, denser, and more stable.  You might think about that with your stump.  Stumps and roots often have incredible grain, but can be unstable.
