how old before you loose the urge?

What is it that gets us out of bed when everyone else rests?  After spending the day Saturday moving feeders and building feeder pins, I pondered how old I would be when I lost the blood lust that drives a person to spend the weekend working to get everything just right for the up coming season.  When my alarm clock went off at 3:30 am this morning, I really didn't want to get up.  Its hot, humid and the bugs are going to be thick after all the rain.  Wondering about my sanity I rolled out an by 5:00 am I was in my stand enjoying the dark swamp sounds.  It was still an hour before day light when I heard the hogs coming.  With no light to use the video camera it seemed almost too easy just to stand and pick up my bow.  When the largest of the dozen or so hogs silhouetted himself I noticed a perfect aiming spot, a V formed by his black front legs against the white dirt.  Concentrating on the V,  the bow came up and I was rewarded with a solid thump as the arrow slammed into the hog.  He made it about 50 yards leaving a trail even my color blind eyes could follow.  I read all the time how folks hate hogs, myself I'm as hooked on them as a crack head.

Thank you for sharing this with us Marty! It's interesting to think why we do what to others seems insane; getting up early, going into bug filled woods, etc. Perhaps it is the hope that always fills our senses everytime we enter the woods, the hope that today is the day when we'll see the big one. And maybe we just find that we can be at peace when we hunt. It's a God given peace that gets us away from the expectations and ideas of "success" that surround us in the culture we live in. I hope I never lose that drive. Just like you I'm "hooked on hunting like a crack head." That's funny right there! Very nice hog! Cheers, Matt

Marty,

Great story, great pig and great shot, too!

What kind of recurve is that you are shooting?  It's gorgeous!

Looks like you found some arrows to fly true out of that bow...were they the 150's?  Great story and a great hog.  Good to see your PGA is just as deadly as all her other sisters in the rack!

Kip

Very nice all around the hogs are so nocturnal on my property and we cannot hunt at nite.Bummer Kip

BUFF

most of the hogs I have taken have been at night. why can't you hunt at night?

Kip

Wildlife and fisheries say people will deer hunt and claim they were hog hunting when caught so harder to monitor.Kip

Way to go Buff! I hope I never loose the urge. Seems like the drive should subside after you shoot one but it just seems to go up.   :bigsmyl:   Nice porker! CK

Great Story ... Cool Bow ... Nice Hog ...

As to when will we lose the urge to hunt? I hope never! It's all in your mind. We NEED to hunt! Other people (non-hunters) would not understand.

I'm only 35 so I hope it is a long time before I lose the urge. My Dad is 61 and has the addiction just as badly as I do. I like to think that as long as I can get up and go to the woods, that I will have the urge to hunt.

Nice hog by the way. Sweet looking bow too.

It doesn't matter how or what you shoot, as long as you hit your target.

I don't know when you lose it.  I am 50 and for me the game is elk.  Hard country for a flatlander like me to get ready for but I stay real busy getting ready for my next hunts.  I have never hunted pigs.  I look forward to a hog hunt next spring.  Nice pig.
