Spring is my favorite time of the year and the best part is seeing the new kids on the block. This morning at daybreak I took a ride to watch the wildlife and get some pictures.
I saw 6 deer running across an open field when I spotted this little guy. He was running as fast as he could but could not keep up with his family.
The lead doe stopped and looked back at the fawn and all the sudden he just hit the deck, quite hard. I thought he had gotten hurt so I drove up closer and he had his little head burried like he was hiding.
I watched him a little while through my binoculars and I kept talking real softly and I saw his ears perk up whenever I spoke. I took some pictures from quite a ways away. I got out of the truck and walked a little closer and he lifted his head and I took this picture:

I went home and showed my wife the picture and she said that she had always wanted to see a newborn fawn up close.
Then this evening we drove back to where I had seen the little tyke and I didn't see him but 20 feet from where he had been laying in the open field, I saw something that looked out of place in some grass next to a telephone pole. It was the fawn.
I told Elaine to walk up close and take some pictures and when she returned to the truck she had tears streaming down her face. She said,"That was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen!" Here he is:

Wudstix--
They're fine!
That's the normal reaction--stop, drop, and freeze!
Momma doesn't usually move with her fawn much if he's not up to speed yet...so they usually hide while momma feeds, and then they suckle until they're old enough to follow and start getting weened..

Awesome pic's guys!!

"instinctive archery" is more like playing the violin. Without practice you may remember the mechanics, but you will not be a virtuoso.

Thanks!!!!  I really think the LORD was helping me out with this one.  I couldn't have asked for better lighting or setting.  I was surprised at how overwhelming it really was, just like a special gift from HIM, and definately one I needed to share.

When I used to ride horses more getting close to fawns is pretty easy.  On day while riding my skiddish gelding in tall unmowed field I noticed we were coming up on a hole in the grass.  I expected that a deer had been there.  Turns out a very young fawn was still there and with in a foot of my horse's nose it pops up and runs off.  Fully expecting a ride of my life instead he acts as if he didn't even see it!
Don't get too close or touch them or the mama will reject them due to the human scent.  I learned that the hard way many years ago.
