I would like to do a do it yourself hunt next year for Merriams Turkeys for my wife and I.  We are turkey hunting fanatics and she really wants to hunt the Merriams.
My question is where would you go? What state? I plan on doing a lot of research once I narrow down the state to locate good public land hunting places to start.  :)

I can't speak for anyplace but my own. SW Colorado public lands, San Juan National Forest near Dolores, also around Pagosa Springs, is full of them. Trouble is, our public lands get really crowded with shotgun hunters and idiots calling from ATVs. You gotta walk, early season is best but you might hit a brief blizzard and plenty of snow still in low spots, but I get into birds every time I go out.

Nebraska has an early archery season that opens before the gun season. The birds are still in large winter flocks and the tom's will work well at that time of year, the weather can get bad though.
