Hey guys anyone got any info on where a guy can have a good DIY public merriams turkey hunt, and what to expect as far as terrain, birds, etc.?I have been looking at the Blackhills area, but really have no idea where(state) to start looking for a good public hunt.

Thanks,

I've never been over there myself, but have heard that the Custer National forest in eastern MT is a good public lands, DIY turkey. MT FWP has a great website that might give you some more info.   http://fwp.mt.gov   Looks like $115 over the counter for non-res, two bird limit.
Is it September yet?!

Go to Hill City South Dakota.  Plenty of public land and a ton of Merrimans.  I have been there twice and have got my bird both times.  Plenty of great site seeing there also with Mt Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument, Rapid City, and great trout fishing.

check out Nebraska!! They have unlimited over the counter tags up to three birds if you want to purchase them, they have a 2 week archery season before the gun season and thousand of acres of public land to hunt on. The state also has a great web site listing of public lands with descriptions as to what type of terrain, vegitation and what animals you can expect to encounter. Also lots of these areas have camp grounds connected right on them. I wont give you my honey hole but check out the North Central countys and then west.
