The week before gun season is always a good time to be out there. Tuesday I slipped into a stand , there were about twenty turkeys across the ditch the stand backs up against . 20 yard wide field road in front of me planted to ladino clover.

The flock moved off a bit so I eased up in the ladder stand and got harnessed up.

Sat down to text bro and tell him where I was , then I heard something walking in the planted trees across the clover strip. Immediately stood up, I'd rather be standing in case the critters to my right , as I'm right handed .

OK it's 3 late hen turkeys that fell behind the rest. Cool, they will pick me off about any second as they are within 20 yards.

Hmm, they aren't paying me any mind at all. Two pick their way down the strip, the last one comes across and into the grass and weeds my ladder is in. Still haven't noticed me, maybe it's the ASAT Vanish leafy suit??

She comes along right in front of me and is eating grass seed. She would clamp her beak on the stem and raise her head and strip the seeds off. Never seen that before! This is why bowhunting is so cool, all the stuff you don't see from a hundred or six hundred yards...

She goes right under the stand and down the slope to a flat area above the ditch where she picks at stuff. The other two are 15 yards farther, and I think I'll just try this...

I ease around and draw my longbow and the arrow is gone , along with a sharp crack!  Bow limb hit something and arrow is stuck in the dirt by her feet. She makes one hop and stands, OK what the heck, we'll try another if I can pull it off.  I reach around where my quiver hangs off my safety rope, and get another arrow, get it on the string(this can't be happening with a turkeys eyesight).  I draw the bow, check clearance on both limbs, focus and let it fly.  She goes down and kicks a few times. I climb down with my bow (already got the spare arow sticking in the dirt a couple feet from her if I need it) .

She is done and I'm in shock that all that really just took place.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Very nice Kenny. I couldn't tell you how many times I've been picked off by them.

On to the rest of the week, slow deer movement  but great weather to be out ,if you like south winds. LOL

Friday morning wind in NNW and light, so bro and I discussed stands, one we call the rut hunt stand is a travel corridor but no sign there.  The other one on that end is close to neighbor's place and don't want to shoot one and have it cross line the day before gun season.  Some folks are kinda sensitive about that... :)

So he went to the stand where I got the turkey and I went to a stand on the end of a levee that stops out in the middle of a big bottom full of  waist to shoulder to high warm season grass. Had little hope of seeing much but gotta be somewhere, right?

Daylight a doe comes in past at 12 yards(looking for me I think, prob watched me walk in) and a small buck is a hundred yards out just chillin.

She goes on by and he heads off NW across the field. An hour goes by and I'm thinkin that's probably it for the morning, but then I see another buck who goes by at 150 yards.  OK that's better. Then another buck 200 behind me crosses middle of bottom field .

Now this is looking up, and another nicer buck goes by on the run at 100 yds, he shouldn't have winded me but ?

Another half hour and a buck comes from the NW , once again across middle of the hill field headed for the bottom. I think, hmmm he is gonna go by at 40 but he turns and comes past the end of the levee brush and then turns N and comes by at 14 yards.

I decide I'll shoot him even tho he is a little small but gun season is tomorrow and there will be a lot less bucks and a lot more careful too.

I shoot and it's a couple inches back from where I wanted but good height. He blasts off and I text bro who had the better stand but has seen nothing. ??

I give him 3o minutes and check the arrow which blew thru and stuck firmly in the dirt.  pretty good blood splatter but no bubbles in it . Hmmm, and the doubts set in.

Stay sharp, Kenny.

Turns out it was a solid liver hit and after I waited 2 hours I followed the blood trail which got better all the way and found him already stiffened up . Better safe than sorry tho, have seen them jumped up and gone long distance . He went about 250

Thank you Lord!!

Congratulations Kenny,

You Done Good!
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Thanks Walt!

I took a video of the buck before I decided to shoot, but no idea how to put it on here.

Great job Kenny! I know that your success is never just luck. You have forgotten more about stickbow hunting than most people will ever learn! Congratulations!
