I am going to be making the trek to hunt Georgia in a week. I have some private land that buts up to the national forest. Hoping for a nice bear/buck combo but will take the piece and quite of hunting a few days in some new country. I was wondering if anybody knew how the mast crop was in northern Georgia?

I'm further south from you but it has been pretty good. I have a buddy in Floyd county that told me today the acorns are pretty much raining down. Good luck to you and there is a pretty good population of hogs in the area you are hunting.

I'm north of you in the Cherokee NF—pretty similar terrain and elevation from what I've seen.  We have a lot of red oaks and chestnut oaks raining down, but I've seen very few white oak acorn this year.  I know chestnut oaks are in the white oak family, but there must be high tannins or something in them because deer and bears here pass them up until everything else is gone.

Thanks Ron,
This place is awsome l. Thick and rugged country
. I have seen one spike so far just to far to shoot.

I'll agree with you Terry, there are alot of acorns, the wildlife doesn't have to move far to get a meal.

What are the trees with the huge acorns? The things are massive.

If they are in higher elevations and rocky soil, they are probably chestnut oaks.  Big acorns in the white oak family—usually yellow colored when they fall.  We sure seem to have a bumper crop of them here this season

You ain't kidding with the size!! They sound like golf balls coming through the woods from a driving range. It is incredible the amount of them in places. You can literally ski on them!

Haven't had much luck since the first day. Had one blow at me this morning but didn't see it.

What is the deer density up in Gilmore County? It reminds me of hunting in the Adirondack of NY. Alot of land and few deer. I would think with the liberal amount of does you would see more deer.

That's rugged country, much like the Adirondacks. But much more food, like the acorns, and there are more deer. But it's tough hunting !! I can't do it anymore! Lots of bears up there also !

Thats were I am at!! Right where the Chattahoochee and Cohutta come together. 1 on 1 slopes seem to be the norm.
