What is the strongest wood used for a 5/16th?

Is it possible for them to come in a 55-60 spine?

Thanks,

T

Terry, Pine Hollow Longbows shows some on his site at 60-65, I have got some 50/55 - 5/16 hickory from him a few years ago, and they are the toughest shafts I've have ever used period. Getting them straight
is not any harder than any other wood arrow.

i got some of those 5/16th'' hickorys a few yrs ago too, havent broke one yet. they are heavy!  be good for flu flu's. and skwirls  :biglaugh:

Thanks guys!

Joe, those red-balau shafts look interesting. I'm taking the two selfbows I made years ago to LTR next year.  It's time they went on an out of state hunt.

I've had good luck with the doug fir shafts from Surewood, give Carson a call and talk to him.  Had a buddy that had some laminated birch he was messing with a few years ago, those were some HEAVY shafts!!!! if you can find some.

Too many bows to list, and so many more I want to try!  Keep the wind in your face, and your broadheads sharp.

Red Balau is a tough and heavy shaft.  I have some raw shafts at 29" BOP and they are 660 grains, without stain or anything else.  Stain, fletch and nock is 100+ grains, plus the point.  My set-up will come in around 920-950 grains for 29" arrow.  Been lazy and haven't made any, yet!!!

Geeezzz, I don't need them that heavy.  The one's that are 5/16ths I'm looking at are 500-535 at full length.  Should be perfect by the time I'm finished.

Compressed Forgewoods are indestructible if you can find em from what I've read.

Wow, I've never hear of Red Balau.  Very interesting, I may have to try some myself. Thanks for sharing.

I think I got mine through Forrester

I would have to say, wood arrows rule.  I have a couple dozen footed and tapered wood arrows that have lasted as long as another other materiel I have shot.  Red Balau is on another plane.  I also have shot into walls and rocks with no adverse effect to the arrows.  Have one footed and tapered POC that just shot through its three critter, a gut shot Javelina on the 2021 LTR.  Warm soapy water cleans it up to go again.

I haven't played with wood arrow shafts in years, but the toughest shafts I've ever used were bamboo shafts.  But....I have no idea where to get high quality bamboo shafts now days... that was years ago.  But it might be worth looking into Terry.
