I was going through some older aluminum shafts I had and cutting off the nock swage to add uni bushings and realized the last inch or so of the shaft is actually compressed and tapered toward the nock. The uni bushing was too tight to fit until the compressed section was cut out. Seems to be shafts that are older like 70s and early 80s era shafts. Shafts from later were fine. Has anyone else experienced this? Lost a few shafts to short overall length. Now that I know what to look for I can look at shafts and tell which ones are not compressed at the nock swage.

Tapered nock ends were necessary because glue on nocks came in only three or four sizes if I recall correctly. Most guys wanted smaller nocks . Yes, I have run into this lately with a couple dozen NOS AO shafts I bought. I had to purchase 9/32 nocks because my 5/16 nocks were to big. Unfortunately I had to reserve my bowstring as well because these new nocks were too tight. Hopefully I won't have any issues when I am hunting with this setup.

Seems to me it was on the thinner wall shafts, Just made up some 2114s that had the knock end tapper and some 2016s that diddnt, 2018s, 2117s, 2216s, not tapered either.......... Just something you will have to check for........
