My son who has finally committed to trad shooting and hunting, has been using mainly carbon arrows that he had already. I asked if he wanted to try some wood arrows, of course I had some in several back quivers for show. His eyes lit up as he checked them out. I even let him shoot a couple to see how they flew. He told me as we walked up to the target to get the arrows, yeah, that would be awesome, really awesome. So, I fixed him up with half a dozen wood arrows with glue on field tips. He then told me that he meant to kill a deer with one of them, I smiled as I told him that I hoped he did. His two young sons think that the trad bows and arrows are the thing. They are working hard to kill the 3D target...from about ten feet away LOL.

Hi Tradslinger,

This post would work better in Powwow. The shooters' forum is intended for questions about how to shoot a bow.

I ordered a bunch of shafts and supplies for my boys for Christmas, we're forecast to have some nasty cold here in Kansas. We'll crank up the fireplace and make some woodies.

I switched to wood arrow about 5 years ago and I love making and shooting them.

The key to success in the shooting sports is consistency.  Remember that when building wood arrows.  They are way more difficult to build than carbon or aluminum.  Enjoyable yes, but not as easy. :archer2:

Nothing quite like a handsome set of woodies. Especially if you are crafting them yourself.

I had a lot of fun with that years ago, but it broke my heart busting them up on 3D courses. I finally went with carbon shafts for my main arrow supply....

Have fun with it... It's very satisfying.    Kirk

I have morfed to tapered shafts.  Cedar, Ash, Red Balau are all great shafts.  The later is almost indestructible.  l and very heavy weight.
