You know how sometimes you are dreaming and you wake up, then go back to sleep and the dream continues....

Up until about two weeks ago I thought my opportunity to bow hunt Moose was over.  It appears it is not.

My brother lives in Edmonton, Alberta. He is not a hunter.  A good friend of mine who lives in Calgary, AB recently retired from part-time moose guiding in the Peace River area. He wasn't the outfitter, but one of the guides who has guided many bowhunters and himself to a lot of moose.

Today my brother is going to the Edmonton Cabela's to get his WIN card and Hunter Host application. With these items he can host up to two alien hunters/every two years as long as one of them is a relative. So, he can host my son (43 years old) and I (68) on this moose hunt. My friend the guide is trying to secure permission to utilize a cabin in the hunting area and he will be our unpaid guide. The hunt is slated for late September.

I'm hoping to use a recurve with my son on a compound. The hunter host has to be present with both of us. So, we'll have a bit of an ungainly squad of 4 hiding behind the bush, but those are the rules of engagement imposed by Alberta.

We can fly for $375 round trip from Louisville to Edmonton in September (current rates) or we can drive 3-4 days each way.  If we fly we will try to ship back an amount of meat and leave the remainder with my brother and his family. If we want, we can meet halfway next summer to get another load. If we drive we'll save that return meeting.  Frankly, I prefer to fly to save a bunch of time.

This isn't a done deal yet, but all the players are very willing if the hunt area cabin can be worked out. I should know about that this next week.  The guide friend is recommending against tenting it due to possible weather issues.

This will give a good excuse to do a lot of things regarding personal conditioning I've been meaning to do. I will also have to bump my max draw weight by about 10 pounds which is more than I've ever had a need to do with a recurve since I was 14.

Unit 441. Nearest town Grand Cache.  My brother lives 4 hours east of this location.

A lot of things cleared up today.

1-way flight: $225/person
4-DayTruck Rental for return home: $391
Gas:$400-500/2
License: $504 (about)
Tax: $445
WIN:$8
Bowhunting permit: ? but I'm sure not much
Taxidermy by guy south of me here: $1,050.

We would transport quarters to my brother's house in Edmonton.  Then we'd spend the day butchering and vacuum packing just like at home with a BIG deer. We'd have to get it frozen and buy some coolers.

The flight is part of the planning to save some time. My son is a professor and doesn't have as much time as I have.

Not final yet but a lot closer than when I started (The Grizzly thread) a couple of weeks ago.

The anticipation of the possibility will be rewarding in and of itself.
