EHD or Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease is back again.  Parasites carried by the black midge fly, are causing whitetail deer to die across the Hudson Valley.  So far, nearly 2 dozen dead deer have been recovered around the area where County Route 31 and Woodchuck Rd./Cold Spring Rd. meet in Hudson, NY.  Once infected with the parasite, the deer die within 5-10 days.  It causes them to overheat, then they seek water to lie down in and cool off, but by that point, they are beyond the point of recovering and die.  We have been asked not to hunt this year, so that the deer that do not contract it, can hopefully survive through the Winter and maintain a healthy herd.
Last year, in several Counties, over 1,200 deer died from EHD.

My area got slammed last year. Large pockets of Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. They're starting to find some here and there.

That hit my area about 6 years ago, we lost 60% of the herd.

I remember that last year too Sean.  I believe that the DEC's total of 1,200 dead last year was severely undercounted.  Possibly double that number is more likely.  It seems to be moving North on both sides of the Hudson River.
Roy, they say it seems to cycle every 10 years or so, but I think those infected midges have also been doing a number on Canadian Moose for several years in a row.

I began seeing deer with very ruff looking hide on the trail camera, then dead deer everywhere.

Knock on wood, but not heard nor seen any cases in western Sullivan county....YET.

GCook

EHD has become so wide spread and so lethal across many states.  In northwest Missouri we have an out break every dry summer.  Our deer heard has not recovered in decades.
Yet we worry about CWD and spend tons of money and research on it.  It's crazy.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

kennym

GCook - what county in NW MO are you hunting? Just curious...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

The count continues to rise near me.  31 dead deer as of this morning.  My cousin, who lives across the road from me, found 3 today, not 15 yards from his house.

Dang Al, that is terrible.  We have some pockets of it every few years, probably about due.

I live on Long Island, but my family has had a place in Hudson, Columbia County for 5 generations.  We have farmed the land, raised cattle, milked cows forever, etc...  Sadly my great Uncles sold their farm over 30 years ago, but I have several cousins within a stoned throw, and another who raises certified organic Black Angus and Red Angus beef cattle nearby in Ghent.
