I didn't know that they would eat road kill...

I had to brake hard to avoid hitting a young one a few years ago in Ohio. It was feeding on roadkill on the center median and when it flew off, it circled round and went right in front of my windshield. Big bugger too!

We have a lot of them in the part of WV I'm originally from - they'll eat whatever they can get their talons and beak into, whether it was dead or not when they got there doesn't much matter to them.

Takes a bit of the "majesty" away doesn't it?  LOL

Who can turn down roadkill Possum? If that's what it is.  :biglaugh:

Bald eagles are basically vultures with a tux on. I am so glad to see them making a comeback.

When I lived in the Mohawk Valley in central NY I saw them all the time by the River. In winter they were right on a deer carcass. Also road kill, but I also would see them fish!!
In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

There are tons of them up here in the U.P. We learned a long time ago when ice fishing not to throw our fish outside the shack because the eagles will swoop right in and grab them instantly. Last year I counted 9 different eagles at one time sitting on the ice just waiting for someone to drop their guard and leave a fish unattended. One took a coho from my buddy and he was just about mad enough to call in and start lobbying for an eagle season haha!

They are a daily sight here along the Susquehanna river. Major come back in the last ten years. Primarily fish hunters, but will not pass up roadkill.
We are all here because we are not all there.

Broken Arrows

Road kill yes, but they can be very deadly. I friend of mine watched a family of 3 take down a white tail.

I've only seen a few eagles but have determined that they are opportunists. They will eat what they can when they can. That was one of the reasons Ben Franklin opposed the eagle as the symbol of America.

One of the few conservation success stories whereby a species was taken off the Endangered Species List.

And yes they eat any meat they can get their talons and beaks into.

Here in Northern MN,  they find deer gut piles pretty quickly.  Interestingly, we have some big ravens and they will push eagles off a gut pile  sometimes.

The last three eagle sightings here quite close to the farm were bald eagles feeding on road kill opossum.

A photographer in Fargo was taking pics of eagles at a nest on the Red River just north of town when an eagle came by with a poodle in its talons .

They are thick as thieves here along the Mississippi in the mid-west.  One of their favorite buffets is eating dead baby pigs near the large hog confinement operations.

Here in Kamloops B.C there are hundreds feeding at the dump. They will follow the garbage trucks in.
