Sky-chief

Good evening everyone.

My last several outings with my recurve have been somewhat surprising.  I'm finding more accuracy and consistency when canting it heavier.

Anyone else cant their recurves heavier than "normal" to good effect?

Best regards, Skychief.

I'm not sure how much cant is normal but I cant a lot and it feels normal to me.
It's not about the kill but the experience.

I think it all depends on the shape of your face and where your eyes are located.    You'll ultimately end up canting the bow to get the arrow centered under your dominant eye

I would think it's a very individual thing. I have found what works for me, and if I do it consistently I have good results.

Yes canting is key to get it under your eye. How much cant is normal I cant say.  :biglaugh:

I've been doing it for 30 years! For me, it removes the bow from blocking my vision and it also helps me torque the string less. It's not for everyone, but it works for me.

I've canted in ALL sorts angles.  My cant angle depends on when the window of opportunity opens. Get stopped with a limb in your way? ...Reverse cant.  Get caught waist deep crossing a slough and hogs come running down the side of the bank? .... severe almost horizontal cant.  Have a pheasant turn at the last second and fly over your head while you're while leaning back and legs crossed up?.... Pretzel cant.

Find your 'back yard shot/cant' and then expound.... have fun!

There were times my accuracy at various ranges was better canting the bow.  But I would hit spots where I couldn't hit squat.  Find I wasn't being consistent in the cant angle.
Maybe too many years shooting a compound straight up vertical to change.
That said, close shots say, 5 yards or less, I have to so what does that say?
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

I find the same for my shooting style, coming from compound with a straight vertical form. I do cant but just enough to get the eye over top of the arrow, aprox at a 1:00 position.

It doesn't matter so much how much, as it does that you do it consistantly.  Go with what feels natural for you and you won't have to worry so much about repeating it every time.

I would think the farther the arrow is above your hand like with a raised rest the more difference it would make, I personally want the arrow as close to my hand as possible and do cant quite a bit

Have canted my bows for as long as I've been shooting- usually about the 2 o'clock position or even more if the situation warraants. Can't hit with a straight up position most of the time. Also find a slightly longer draw with a cant of the bow.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

elk nailer

all you have to do is put your ow hand straight out infront of you and see the cant!

BTW. canting is not just reserved for recurves....

Its fine for longbows, selfbows and compou....

It seems to me that, if you are a hunter, you need to be able to shoot with all degrees of cant, from straight up and down to horizontal and maybe beyond. The arrow needs to go to the same place regardless of cant. The only way to achieve that is by practicing in all the positions.
