This is a bamboo backed and bellied tri lam I was building a year ago. It had a lot of set and one limb went off to one side. I picked it up again a few days ago and I managed to get it straight. Now the top limb is stronger than the lower one. I have been scraping and sanding to get it even with the other limb but no luck. The difference is only a quarter inch from limb to string. What do you all think?

The bow is about 70". I'm not sure of the draw weight because my scale is messed up. The core is pacific yew and the riser is zebra, padauk, wenge and maple.

I agree, it took a lot of set. So many nice woods in there, I hope you can make it work!

This bow started out with an inch of backset, but now it's got a lot of set. It draws about 60# or so at 28". I need a new scale.

Good enough for me. I wouldn't give it to anyone. I'm thinking that I'll finish it and keep it for myself. I have another bow, the third one I built, that has a weird set but boy is it a sweet shooter!

The right side limb in your picture looks pretty stiff. I'm guessing with a Bamboo back and belly, you can only adjust the tiller from the edges?

That's the top limb. I have scraped and sanded it until it started getting narrower than the other one. I finished the string and shot it to see how it performed. I'm not sure what the draw weight is, but it's about as much as I can shoot and it sure sunk them deep into the target.

Looks like you got a classic old school Joiners style bench there, with those dog holes going down the leg

My Dad and I built that bench some 30 years ago. It was supposed to be a temporary one because it's only made of spruce. We were supposed to replace it with a heavy one. 🙂
My Dad is an old school carpenter. He can build almost anything.

The dog holes are to support a door while it's being planed. We built a lot of doors.

Looks like it's flat outside of both fades and all the bending is out a few more inches and outer limbs are both flat. However I don't tune to make both limbs look the same, I tune for equal limb timing and let the limbs be what they wanna be.

Good to hear from you Roy. That oval sure helps. It shoots well enough, but I think I'll take a few more scrapes off the outers. Especially the top limb.

I've never tried a boo bellied bow...but my understanding is you need good boo and the belly needs to be cooked pre glue up otherwise they can take a lot of set. Yours is dark from what I can see. Maybe just not a good piece? Maybe ya overstressed it? Just guessing. With these you must also have basically dead nuts the same thickness taper in your lams for both limbs. It's pretty much like a glass bow recipe that you have to figure out. There shouldn't be much material removal after glue up. Just from the sides like you are. It looks like the stronger limb has a thicker core than the weaker limb to my eyes. Good luck..hope it comes around for ya.
