Chasing rings on a stave and it's my first with a hole thru it, definitely kicking my ass. Anyone have advice on how they would work it, if anyone has done it and has pictures, I'd love to see some. I tried posting a picture of the stave but my phone is being bad right now.

Without seeing the hole it's hard to say. At any rate you still want to follow the back ring around and possibly down into the hole on the back. On the belly it usually doesn't matter. Be sure to follow the grain around the hole so it flows like a river around a rock. That area around the hole will be a little wider than the rest of the limb.

Just eave enough wood equal to the width of the limbs. Jawge

Here is Jeremy's stave.

I use a round nose cabinet scraper for difficult areas. There is one in this picture;

I also use a few scrapers I made out of concrete nails, I call them pin knot scrapers. I did have a tutorial here on how to make them but the photobucket thing got rid of all the pictures and I haven't redone it. I make other special tools out of nails as well for flintlock building.

Pretty easy; heat the nail to red hot, hammer the end flat, file and bend the flared end to shape, sharpen, heat again and quench, install in a handle.
