I bought some India ink and quill pen fir marking draw weight etc on bow.
Should I do it after scuff sanding the glass before first coat of finish, or on top of first coat then cover it with final coat?

I use acrylic ink and put it on after the first finish coat.  I would suspect India ink would work the same wsy.

I put mine on before the last coat of finish.

I've been using Uni- ball gel pens. Archival ink stands up to hot solvents in CV or other gnarly finishes.
I only do two coats, so it's a tweener.

Thanks for the replies. WIll be spraying  finish on Fri or  Saturday.  Im itchin to get this thing tuned up and in the woods.

Between coats for me as well.  Makes it easier to "edit" if the finish does something weird to the ink.

I use white acrylic calligraphy ink, as the osage darkens the lettering get more prominent. With the acrylic I can wipe it off with a damp paper towel and start over if I goof up and I goof up a lot.

I finish with tru-oil and put two coats over the lettering.

I have used the gelly roll pens from the art supply store, they work good. I now use Faber Castell India ink pens. Always done it right on the raw bow, wood or glass. Then put a heavy mist of finish on the lettering and let it dry for a while. Then carry on with the spraying process. I use Thunderbird.

If I'm in a hurry, I let the ink dry then mist the lettering with lacquer in an aerosol... Dries super fast. Then do my thang.

Eric, what kind of pen do you use with the white ink? My pens work fine with black ink, but the white doesn't flow worth a dang.

The pen I got many years ago from Dave before Tbird changed hands works well with all ink. It is a Sengbusch handi-pen No. 99 fine. You might message Bowman and see if that is what he still has.

I use the el-cheapo extra fine nibs from Hobby Lobby. I use the eyedropper(my new bottle has an eyedropper, the one in the picture doesn't) to put a drop of ink on the underside of my nib, then get things started by pulling the pen toward me with the nib on a piece of cardboard, this also gets rid of the excess ink.

I touch the nib to the bow to make a tiny dot and start writing. If you don't make this dot very often things won't flow right. I only make the dot on the first letter of the first line, it is unnecessary for the next line.

One pen load may not be enough to write several lines, it the pen starts to skip I reload it and go through the process again as necessary.

I use a Sharpie and brush on a finish coat of poly acrylic. Jawge
