Glued up a bow with some apple veneers. Aired it up really slow, 10 pounds at a time because I worried they might split but the they still did. Oh well, minor cosmetic flaw.
Did you use a pressure strip on the glueup? To me those topless forms need a really good pressure strip.

Nice looking Apple wood! I have a bunch of fruitwood. It's generally beautiful stuff, but seems like most of it checks and splits like crazy!

Travis, I have a split limb osage bow. It is prob 10 years old and still good. The splits are a lot bigger than the ones you have there! I didn't know the veneers were gonna split and aired it right on up.LOL

That bow looks to have a pretty good hook on it!! Bet she will be quick!!

Stay sharp, Kenny.

Flem, it does check like crazy. I lost a small knot out of them when I ground them. In my experience it's really easy to split veneers when they have a missing knot or a small crack. I think the hydraulic pressure forces them apart. That's why I went slow airing it up. Tried to let the glue work out slowly.

Kenny, they seem quick but I haven't actually tested them. I haven't built one in my weight range yet. Hopefully by this summer I'll get one built for myself as well as one of your FHLB's.

Thats got to feel good and be a relief!

It does feel good. Although if they dont come apart you still have a one piece. This one is acting weird though. And never had one do this but it is working apart some when you pull it back. I would think with the string tension it should not even offer to do that.  :dunno:

Got the bow laid up and on cure.  Used a 2" foam roller to apply the adhesive and it worked out much better than my previous method.

Dug through the osage pile in the attic today and came up with 4 pieces in various stages of completion.  I vow to finish at least these 4 this year.  Been a couple years since I ade anything at all.  Looking forward to it.

Well we are off the form and unwrapped!  Bond lines look to be the best I've ever made and zero springback after release.  Will post pictures once I can clean it up on Tuesday.
